SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities
The objective behind SDG 10 is to reduce inequality within and among countries. To reduce inequality, the needs of disadvantaged and marginalized populations are to be brought to the forefront.
- Fab Lab on Wheels (FLoW): to promote equal opportunity and provide technology access to marginalized communities in rural Egypt, the Fab Lab on Wheels was launched. The Fab Lab on Wheels initiative is the first of its kind in Egypt. It consists of a mobile Fab Lab housed in a bus that serves to bring the latest in digital fabrication technologies to marginalized areas. The bus essentially democratizes technology and provides rural areas with the opportunity to equal access to resources, education, entrepreneurship and workforce development. In its first year, the bus has reached over 3170 participants, conducted over 190 workshops, and gave over 470 bus tours introducing visitors to digital fabrication.
- Fixed Fab Labs: Giza Systems Education Foundation has established 5 fab labs in Egyptian governorates: Minya, Sohag, Beni Suef, Fayyoum and Menoufia. The labs serve to combat inequalities by providing equal access to technology at no or low cost. These labs serve to train the rural communities on digital fabrication, assist entrepreneurs, and act as a bridge for universities and youth organizations.
- Project Nitrous: the main tenet of this pilot project is to work towards the inclusion of persons with disabilities by developing highly customizable assistive devices through the employment of digital fabrication. The project also involves persons with disabilities in product design and learning digital fabrication skills to promote them actively joining the workforce.
